Rochester Police officer involved in shooting on State Street

A Rochester Police officer fired their weapon during an investigation Wednesday night on State Street – however, no one was hurt.

This began around 7:30 on State Street near Lyell Avenue. Police say a citizen reported seeing three men, one of whom may have had a gun. Officers responded to the area and attempted to approach the men, all of whom reportedly fled. One of the three allegedly had a gun and was told by officers to drop it. As the individual tried to discard it, police say one of the officers felt the gun was pointed at law enforcement and fired one shot from his gun. No one was hit. 

Police say the officer who fired the weapon remained at the scene while the other officers at the scene pursued the suspect, taking him into custody without incident near Smith Street.
 

 
Investigators say the suspect's gun was found in a parking lot on State Street.
 

 
The Major Crimes Unit is investigating the incident. That investigation includes a review of body camera footage and interviewing of witnesses.
 

 
Police say they believe the individual who had the gun was 19-years-old.
