City of Rochester flushes fire hydrants

Wondering why the City of Rochester has water pouring all over the streets from fire hydrants. Rochester, New York city crews will be flushing fire hydrants for the next couple of days.

We stopped by and saw some city crews flushing a fire drill nearby, so we asked him what was going on. The City of Rochester crews tells us they are flushing the fire hydrants for any substances, any oils, and any dirt or rust in the water. They tell us they will be doing this until November. The crew advised that during the winter months, they make sure all the fire hydrants are safe and accessible for the fire department.

Fire hydrants are used to put out house fires or in case of emergency they are used to help nearby houses if water goes out. They also help with cool sweeps in the City Rochester if the weather is over 85°.
