Crime decreases in Rochester as the mayor and police continues to use combat tactics
Rochester police, David Smith and Mayor Malik Evans say they have been using tactics around the city to combat violence and nuisance properties.
Chief Smith says RPD took more than 800 firearms off the streets in 2023.
Rochester police says it's the first police agency in the nation to have an on-call ATF agent (ATF “primarily enforces federal firearms statutes and investigates arsons and bombings”.
They can review the possibility of a person being charged federally for a firearm. Says this initiative has led to more than 100 people being charged federally.
The number of homicides dropped from a record 85 in 2021 to 58 in 2023 — a 32 percent decrease from the previous years.
Richester Mayor Malik Evans says there's more work to be done.
