Fire investigation after woman dies in house fire on Hancock Street
On January 27 around 4:00am the Rochester Police Department received a report of a domestic violence incident at 27 Hancock Street. As officers were responding to the scene, they also received a call for a structure fire at the same location.
As officers along with firefighters arrived on scene. Upon arrival, they noticed the residence, which is a multi-family structure, engulfed in flames. Firefighters were advised that their people trapped on the 3rdfloor.
Firefighters were able to rescue residents from the 1stand 2nd floors. As firefighters entered the 3rd floor, parts of the building began to collapse. Firefighters were able to check parts of the 3rd floor where they located a victim who was deceased. The victim is a female resident who was in her 70’s.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire.
Two residents suffered injuries related to smoke inhalation. One firefighter suffered burns to his lower body.
The Rochester Fire Department, the Arson Task Force, and the Rochester Police Department are investigating the incident. It is unknown what caused the fire. No suspects are in custody at this time.
