Mass shooting in Rochester New York leaves 2 dead and 14 people wounded
The Rochester Police Department was called to the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in Rochester, New York shortly after 12:30am on Saturday morning after a mass shooting occurred. Officers from the Rochester Police Department, Irondequoit Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State Police responded to the scene.
As officers arrived on scene, they found numerous people leaving the scene of a backyard party with more than 100 people. As officers were assessing the scene, they noticed numerous people who sustained gunshot wounds. Some of the victims were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital and Rochester General Hospital by ambulance. Other victims were transported to local hospitals by private vehicles.
Rochester Police Department did conduct a neighborhood search looking for other victims. No other victims were found.
Acting Chief of Police, Mark Simmons advise that the Rochester Police Department is still in the early stages of the investigation, but that the preliminary information indicates that the shooting occurred at a backyard party that was happening at 200 Pennsylvania Avenue. The party had more than 100 people when the shooting occurred outside of the residence.
2 victims, one male, one female between the ages of 18-25 have been pronounced dead. The other 14 victims ages have not been confirmed, but all have non-life-threatening injuries.
The scene which expands over a large area, has been searched by officers who are looking for other victims, and any evidence pertaining to the shooting.
Acting Chief Simmons stated that prior to the shooting occurring, the Rochester Police Department had not received had not received any 911 calls for a party or illegally parked vehicles in the area.
Mayor Lovely Warren released the follow statement on the incident:
“I’ve been briefed by Acting Police Chief Simmons on the shooting event which occurred on Pennsylvania Avenue in the City of Rochester. Our Pathways to Peace Team is on the ground and working with the victims and their families. I’m asking the community for prayers and support for all involved. This tragic act of violence has impacted many people's lives and families. I’m begging everyone to remain calm and exercise deep restraint as RPD investigates what happened here and seeks those responsible. As soon as additional information is available the police department will provide updates on this matter. Please keep our city in your continual prayers.”
