Officer Down near Dewey Avenue and Glendale Park

Around 11:05 A.M police respond to a 911 call possibly involving a person with mental illness. When police arrived, a male suspect came at the officers with a knife striking one of the officers.

The police officer then shot the suspect at least once. The suspect then ran from the scene.

The suspect was later taken into custody in the area of the 400 block of Dewey Avenue. The officer, a 20 year veteran of the police department was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was taken to Rochester General Hospital and is expected to survive.

The area of Dewey Avenue from Bloss Street, on the south, to Lexington will be closed for the immediate future for investigative purposes, according to police.

The investigation is still ongoing and more information will be released Monday.

Mayor Lovely Warren released the following statement:

"Our police officers put themselves at risk every time they put on their uniform. Sadly, today, one of Rochester's finest was injured while protecting our city. While I am heartened to hear that the injured officer will be released from the hospital and heading home soon, I ask all of our residents to pray for him and his family. I am thankful that no one was more seriously injured in this incident and wish our officer a quick and full recovery."

Rochester police chief La'Ron D. Singletarty released the following statement:

"I would to thank the entire community for their thoughts, prayers, & well wishes for the speedy recovery of one of our officers who suffered injuries from an assault while responding to a 911 call. Please continue to keep our officers in your prayers."
